Ithaca is a city located in the central section of the state of New York, in Tompkins County.
The city is named for the Greek island of Ithaca, in which the hero from the Greek classic the Odyssey is from.
Ithaca is located on the southern end of Cayuga Lake, which is one of New York's Finger Lakes.
The city was founded in 1790 and Incorporated as a city in 1888.
As of 2000, the estimated population of Ithaca was 29,287, and the Metro area had a population of 100,018.
Ithaca is home to an Ivy League school, Cornell University and to Ithaca College.
The city also claims to be the birthplace of the ice cream sundae.
